Chile is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. Approximately 30% of the world’s seismic energy is liberated in its territory owing to the high speed of convergence between the Nazca and South American tectonic plates.
These movements cause technology, warning systems, and communications to collapse, leaving a large part of the country isolated, with no electricity, television, Internet or telephone network, in some cases for emergency periods that last several days.
For the Oficina Nacional de Emergencia (ONEMI, or National Office of Emergency) there is a real priority to reinforce the culture of prevention, and for this, it is vital that each home has an Emergency Kit.
The radio broadcasting system plays an important role in emergency situations because of the proven stability and continuous cover achieved by this medium turn radio into the main support channel. Moreover, Chile is the country that receives the greatest amount of solar radiation in the world, specifically in the Norte Grande region. It is estimated that solar radiation here is between 7 and 7.5 kWh/m2.
For this reason, the Oficina Nacional de Emergencia developed: “ONEMI Radio” an emergency radio with photovoltaic cells that functions without conventional electricity or batteries. This facilitates access to information immediately after an emergency, lessening people’s uncertainty, anxiety, and distress. ONEMI Radio is a vital element that every family should include in their Emergency Kit in order to stay connected and informed after an earthquake or another such emergency. The Radio is given out for free at different community courses offering training in the prevention of emergencies, organized by ONEMI through their CERT department and held all over Chile.
